Who is reluctant to be Princess? Gab, for sure. She became Princess rather suddenly, when Terreis's "Right of Caste" was given to Gabrielle just before Terreis died from wounds gotten in an ambush. This was in the first season episode, Hooves and Harlots, which happens to be the first X:WP episode I saw (I came a little late to the game).
But later, she takes the Queen Mask and dons it before Velasca gets a chance to do so, cementing her right to be the next Amazon Queen. And what a fabulous costume Renee O'Connor got to wear as Queen:

and I never found the purple cloth underskirt (it wasn't part of the
package). I obtained this online during It's A Wrap's auction of H:TLJ
and X:WP props and costumes.
