By now you may have seen the notice Barbie put in the December 2007 issue of her Xena Prop House Newsletter or the blurb on MaryD's site, but Creation has said that they cannot auction Kevin Smith's Ares costume at the Xena Convention. Jennifer Ward-Leland's website has the details. This is disappointing, because I know of at least one person who was making the trip out to this convention specifically to bid on the costume. With Lucy Lawless originally slated to auction the costume, that would have given everyone an additional reason to watch (and hopefully participate) in the costume auction.
On Jennifer's site, Creation is noted to have said that they can no longer hold any charity auctions at the convention due to a change in California law. Does anyone have any additional information on this in particular? I've not been able to find such a change, but I'm not an attorney, and may be searching incorrectly.
If this is true, it will be hard for Xenites to grasp, because I've noticed that whenever you get a minimum of 6 Xena fans together in one room, one of them invariably asks, "When's the charity auction?" Charity auctions are intrinsic to Xena fandom, were a feature of Xena gatherings from the very beginning, and as someone who has participated in my fair share, I am also very disappointed in this development.
On the plus side, for the Smith family, an ebay auction will most likely garner a higher price as many more people will be able to participate in an online auction. Still, I'd like to think that the Xenaverse would not have failed her at the Xena Convention and the outcome would have been laudable.
(Update 12/16: I had done a quick search on Calif's legal code web site and had found a paragraph that might apply. I emailed this to another fan and it's gotten around: I found it posted to the message board at Xena Online Community. Please don't quote it as the reason for this situation; there may very well be something else operative).
